JOAN WINKERS JONES

Joan Winkers Jones died Monday, March 12, 2007. She was the widow of Benjamin Bostick Jones III, who retired as Vice President of Technical Development at Savannah Foods and Industries. She was a native Savannahian, the last surviving daughter of the late Joseph Henry Winkers and the late Daisy Lillian Overton Peck Winkers.
Her sisters Margaret Claremont Winkers Mueller and Laurie Delannoy Winkers Gurney predeceased her.
Joan was Valedictorian and president of her Savannah High School Class of 1945. Upon graduation she was awarded a full scholarship to the University of Michigan. In Savannah she attended Armstrong Junior College prior to her marriage.
A lifetime member of Christ Church she taught Sunday school and worked many years with the Christ Church Tour of Homes and Gardens. Joan was a member of Historic Savannah Foundation, the Savannah Symphony Women’s Guild, the Humane Society, the Garden Club of Savannah, Savannah Golf Club and The Oglethorpe Club. She was also a supporter of the Georgia Equine Rescue League.
Joan’s greatest love was her late husband Ben, whom she met in high school. They were married April 23, 1949, shortly after his graduation from The Citadel. She was a homemaker, raising their two daughters and countless cats in their house on Brandywine Road. Her interests included genealogy, writing, reading and playing bridge with “the girls” at the Yacht Club and later at home. She was an accomplished dancer, possessing a great natural talent for acrobatic dance and ballet.
Joan is survived by her daughters, Miss Barbara Lynn Jones and Mrs. Julia Bostick Jones Williams Mrs. Charles Lawton and granddaughters the Misses Cecelia Bostick Williams and Margaret Lawton Williams, all of Savannah. Joan was known as “Noni” by her immediate family, a nickname bestowed upon her by Cecelia, her first granddaughter.
She is also survived by three nieces and one nephew and two great nieces.
Joan’s lifelong and dearest friends Shirley and George Oelschig also survive.


Visitation will be Tuesday, March 13, 2007 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Fox and Weeks Funeral Directors Hodgson Chapel.

Graveside Services will be Wednesday, March 14, 2007 at 11 a.m. in Bonaventure Cemetery with The Reverend Marcus B. Robertson, of Christ Church officiating.
